A Hymnal for Family Worship

One of the ministries that our family supports regularly is Grace to You. I will always be indebted to them for faithfully teaching me the Word of God. What I mean is that my commute times (during my broadcasting days) in D.C. were as long as two hours each way, and even in Harrisburg, an hour back and forth. In the car, I would consume just about every message from John MacArthur’s “Grace to You” program. In fact, it informally trained me for many aspects of ministry years later.

It contains hundreds of hymns with many contemporary song additions. There’s 34 from Stuart Townsend, 30 from Keith Getty, 11 from Sovereign Grace Music, 5 from Bob Kauflin, 2 from R.C. Sproul and 2 from John MacArthur.

This hymn book is a wonderful compilation of the old and new. A blending of the treasured hymns of numerous generations. Each and every one magnifies the greatness of God and proclaims the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dr. MacArthur writes in his member letter:

Every Christian should own and use a hymnal as part of his or her devotional library. Hymns of Grace features nearly 450 hand-selected, thematically arranged, theologically rich hymns and spiritual songs… I believe music reaches its highest level and achieves its greatest use among Christians. Why? Because our music reflects that which is most lofty, most elevated, most exalted, most noble: the unchanging truth of God. Our music reflects and revels in biblical truth.

I wholeheartedly agree. Over the years we have used a number of resources during our times of family worship (in the home and even in the car), such as the Hymns for a Kid’s Heart series and the Together for the Gospel Live albums. As a result, many traditional hymns have been passed down to our children.

“Oh, the Deep, Deep Love” is one of my favorites. I was thrilled to find it in this hymnal (page 154) as our family knows it well, and I will most likely be humming it throughout this day! You can listen to it here.

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me
Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of Your love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To Your glorious rest above

Oh the deep, deep love
All I need and trust
Is the deep, deep love of Jesus

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Spread His praise from shore to shore
How He came to pay our ransom
Through the saving cross He bore
How He watches o’er His loved ones
Those He died to make His own
How for them He’s interceding
Pleading now before the throne

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Far surpassing all the rest
It’s an ocean full of blessing
In the midst of every test
Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Mighty Savior, precious Friend
You will bring us home to glory
Where Your love will never end

Hymns of Grace will be available for purchase as of March 21. I would encourage you to pick up this devotional resource for your home.
